What Makes Us Different?

The Quilt Asylum of McKinny, TexasI opened TQA with a vision of having the "Cheers" of quilt shops. We want to get to know you, assist you with your projects, and provide a community where you can just come, hang out, and sniff some lint! Our goal is to ship internet orders within 24 hours (most are same-day). We have 2 full-time and 13 part-time employees.  We have been in business since 2000 and have a proven track record for quality, service, and selection.

We're all about the fun! We do our best to bring you the most up-to-date fabrics, tools, publications and classes. We hope to inspire your creativity through numerous samples and education. And we're not afraid to try something new or laugh at ourselves in the process.

Our Story

We opened our doors on September 25, 2000. My husband actually talked me into opening a quilting store. I was laid off from a corporate job in 1998 and purchased a longarm quilting machine in February 1999 so that I could work from home. I could not believe my quilting haven in McKinney closed in August of 1999 forcing me to drive to another town to The Quilt Asylum of McKinny, Texaspurchase my fabric. It was after listening to my consistent whining about the commute that my husband Russ reacted with, "Why don't you open your own quilt shop?"

I continued to quilt for the public, but soon realized my true love was sewing and playing with fabrics. Once again Russ brought up the idea of owning a quilt store. Finally, on June 25, 2000, we were sitting on the front porch discussing the current state of affairs. Russ mentioned opening a quilt shop one more time. I asked him if he was ready for life as he knew it to be over. He said yes. I said I would look into it. Before I knew it, a space was rented, supplies were purchased, fixtures were built (by him in 100 degree weather) and we opened 90 days later with 300 bolts of fabric in my hometown of McKinney, TX. I truly believe it was God's plan for me. I haven't been in charge of laundry since and the rest is history!

We are honored to have been selected as a Top Ten Quilt Shop by American Patchwork & Quilting Magazine in 2006.  We were doubly-pleased when our original design quilt featuring Kaffe Fassett fabrics called “Nuts and Bolts” was featured on the cover of the magazine!

I'm proud to say that today The Quilt Asylum has expanded to over 6000 square feet and of 100% quilting cottons to cover every taste. We offer modern designer fabrics by Kaffe Fassett, Amy Butler, Lizzy House, and others, as well as batiks, 30’s reproductions, novelty and juvenile, plus standard basic fabrics.  We also carry the newest books and patterns to be found in the marketplace.

So, What Are We All About?

We're all about the fun! Whether it’s a bus trip, a Quilt Market Review presentation, a quilting class or club, we promise that you will have a laugh or two and a good time.  We're not afraid to try something new or laugh at ourselves in the process.

We’re all about commitment to service and quality!  We are committed to you as our customer and to the quilting and sewing industry in general.  We are dedicated to providing the best customer service possible, to offering the highest-quality products, and delivering the best value for your dollar.  We have been in business since 2000 and have a proven track record in these areas.

We are all about selection.  I'm proud to say that today The Quilt Asylum has expanded to over 6000 square feet and carries over 4000 bolts of 100% quilting cottons to cover every taste. We offer modern designer fabrics by Kaffe Fassett, Amy Butler, Lizzy House, and others.  We alsoThe Quilt Asylum of McKinny, Texas stock batiks, 30’s reproductions, novelty and juvenile, plus standard basic fabrics from a wide-range of fabric suppliers such as Westminster/FreeSpirit, Moda, Kaufman, Michael Miller, Hoffman, Timeless Treasures/Dear Stella, Andover, Riley Blake and many more.  We do our best to bring you the most up-to-date fabrics, books, notions, Blocks of the Month, quilt kits, and sewing and quilting classes. We hope to inspire your creativity through numerous samples located throughout our store.

We’re all about fat quarters!  We cut and maintain fat quarters for EVERY bolt in our store!  We stock over 15,000 fat quarters in our store at all times.  Even though the minimum cut of fabric in our online store is ½ a yard, you can always order the ½ yard and tell us that you would prefer just fat quarters of any fabric online in the comment section.  We will adjust your purchase total to reflect the fat quarter when we process your order.

We are all about education.  My favorite thing about owning a quilt shop is sharing knowledge – those little tips and tricks that are learned through trial and error!  Whether you learn through one of our many quilting classes, one-on-one conversations, Market Review presentations, or “cutting table seminars”, we are always willing to share what we know with you in order for you to be successful.  With over a century combined of sewing and quilting experience amongst our staff, you can trust that we can help you with any stage of your quilting project!

We are all about community!  We participate in many activities that support our surrounding civic community, but we also understand that quilting and sewing is often a “group sport” and can be more rewarding when shared with friends.  We want to foster the feelings of friendship and support through many of our clubs and events such as Bring and Brag, Marti and Me Club, Night Owls, Quilt-Alongs, and Daytreat to name a few.

We are all about YOU!  We fully understand that without you, we would have no reason to exist.  If there is something specific that you need that we don’t have in stock, we’ll be glad to special order it for you.  Whether you visit us in person, or allow us to service your quilting needs wherever you live, your satisfaction is our number one focus.  We are here to celebrate your successes and achievements and to hold your hand whenever you need us.

We know that you have a choice when selecting who will service your sewing and quilting needs, and we are honored when you choose to shop with us either in person or through our online store.  Whether you visit with us once a week, once a month, or once a year, we will always consider you our friend.  We really do appreciate your business!
